Living Life and “Feeling Good as Hell”

"I do my hair toss
Check my nails
Baby how you feelin'?
Feeling good as hell"
- "Good as Hell," Lizzo

With having to self quarantine and be stuck in my house for the past few weeks due to the current global crisis, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on my life. The problem with me, though, is that when I have spare time, time when I’m not focused on a specific task or my mind isn’t occupied by schoolwork, I tend to begin to feel depressed. I tend to focus on the parts of my life that aren’t the greatest. And for this reason, about a week into this coronavirus quarantine crisis, I was feeling increasingly depressed.

The other day, I was in the car with my dad, and he could tell that I was struggling with being stuck at home with nothing to do. And while I usually think any advice that comes from either of my parents is stupid and not worthy of my attention, what he had to say was something I really needed to hear. I had a choice. I could either waste this time wallowing in self pity and misery, or I could use the time to self improve and work on things that I’ve had to set aside during the school year. I’ve found ways to start feeling better – about the current situation, about life, about myself as a person. It’s funny how just changing a few things in your life can completely alter your confidence and outlook on life.

Books Instead of Netflix

Yes, I have been watching Netflix a lot lately. And while it was entertaining and made me laugh, I found myself wasting away the majority of my time, day after day. In a way, I felt drained and worthless after glancing at the clock only to discover that I’d just spent three hours watching mindless sitcoms. I wasn’t using my brain at all!

Stop binge watching and start binge reading. Whether it’s literary classics, the news, poetry, or even blogs – reading re-energizes the mind, sparking productivity, creativity, and curiosity. Whenever I’m facing a problem or I’m struggling, I’ve found reading to be a source of comfort and happiness in my life. It’s my love for literature that has gotten me through some of the most challenging of times.

Go Outside and Take a Walk

Today, I went outside and just took a long walk for the first time in a long time. I put my AirPods in, listened to some great music, and enjoyed the fresh air. It may sound silly, but I felt free. I could listen to my music and take time to think about everything without any interruptions. And it was so good to get some exercise. I felt healthy and refreshed.

Stay Busy

Sometimes it’s good to have a break and just be lazy. We all need to stop and rest now and then. But we should never rest for too long. The time we have on this earth is fleeting. Every opportunity we have to learn and grow as individuals is so precious. Use the time you have to help others, be with loved ones, chase your dreams, challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone, make the world better than you found it… We should strive to live our lives fully, like every day was our last.

Listen to Some Confidence-Boosting BOPS!

The music you listen to reflects the emotions your feeling. Find music that makes you feel confident, ambitious, and… alive. I’m proud to say that with Lizzo and Beyonce’s bops, I’m ready to rule my world.

I know I’m not the expert – believe me, I think this post is more for me than anyone else – but life is short. We shouldn’t be spending time hiding from who God made each of us to be or wallowing in our problems. We’re lucky to be alive! Be grateful for what you have, be kind to others, and cherish every moment.
